Who Is Osun?

Osun (Ozun) was originally the guardian — a position lost when he fell asleep while Oggún committed incest with Yemmú. Obatala removed him from his post and gave the role to Elegua instead. Osun remains a major Orisha, acting as messenger for Obatala and Olofi. Orula relies on Osun's presence to hold the powers of divination and true, transcendent knowledge.

Osun serves as head guardian for believers. He does not receive an eleke or a hand of cowries. Unlike many Orishas, Osun is not one of possession but of irradiation — he neither rises nor is seated in a person. He is received together with the Warriors (Elegua, Ogun, and Ochosi).

No letter in the Diloggún speaks specifically for Osun — instead, he accompanies the Warriors as a constant presence, representing life itself.

Sign, Day, and Numbers

Osun's day is Thursday, and his numbers are 8, 16, and 24.

Attributes

Osun is represented by a rooster figure set atop a weighted, pedestal base with a perpendicular axis implanted in a covered receptacle containing his sacred charge. The figure atop the staff may take the form of a rooster, dove, dog, or lizard.

He represents all colors during the Ocan Fifi (initiation) ceremony, since his name itself means "color" or "paint." Tradition holds four foundational colors central to his nature: white, blue, yellow, and red.

Traditional Offerings

The white dove is Osun's specific offering, though he shares in whatever is offered to Elegua, Ogun, and Ochosi as well. When Osun's staff falls on its own, it is taken as a warning — announcing death or misfortune ahead.
